Number of moviegoers down 7.8 per cent in 2005

Going to the theatre remains one of life’s great social pleasures — even if the silver screen’s popularity has diminished lately.

So says Christian McGean from Hamilton, who waited in oppressive heat for doors to open at Empire Studio 8 in the Pen Centre.

McGean and St. Catharines godson Damonte Wilson, 10, were about to catch a Friday matinee of The Simpsons Movie.

“We like the movie-going experience,” McGean said. “You get that surround-sound and other people’s reactions.

“And there’s a great group dynamic that happens.”

This thumbs up for theatre outings was shared by fewer Canadians in 2005, Statistics Canada says.
