Ample pleasures

Full-figured American Idol winner Jordin Sparks, who had to endure an unjustified slagging from anti-obesity campaigner MeMe Roth earlier this year, can probably relate to Tracy Turnblad. Tracy is the chunky, spunky heroine of Hairspray, cult filmmaker John Waters’ funny fable about tolerance set in early-1960s Baltimore. Like Jordin, Tracy’s got her eyes on a prize — in her case, a spot on a popular TV dance show. And, also like her Idol counterpart, she has to put up with the fascist attitudes of skinny blondes.
